Welcome to Good Instructing
Learn to drive in an automatic with Jim Gooding of Good Instructing. Less stress, more fun. There is more to driving than changing gear.
Learn a system of driving as taught in the Police where by on seeing any hazard, from a parked car, to a child at the pavement edge, to a car waiting to emerge the following check list is considered.
Mirrors, - What is following you, are they too close, are they about to overtake.
Signal, - Is a signal necessary, will it inform others of your intentions?
Position, - Is your position on the road the best to deal with the hazard.
Mirrors, - Has following traffic reacted correctly to your intention.
Speed, - Do you need to lose or increase your speed to deal with the hazard. Most usually to reduce but on occasions an increase in speed may be called for.
Decision, - Proceed or hold back.
For example when turning left into a side road.
On seeing the side road, check your mirrors both interior and exterior. Signal with your left indicator. Position your vehicle to the left of the safety line that you have been driving along at. Check your interior and nearside mirror and reduce speed either by braking or just easing off the throttle to a speed correct to negotiate the turn. You are now approaching the corner in the correct position at the cotrect speed. Lastly is it safe to negotaite the corner? Check your nearside mirror once more and if safe apply steering by push pulling the wheel and negotiate the corner. When the car has rounded the corner, straighten the steering wheels, ckeck your mirrors and accelerate gently away form the corner.
Such a system of car control keeps the mind active and aids concentration so that every hazard is dealt with safely.
