Taking the first step
"When I teach counselling skills to post-graduates I stress how difficult it is for people to take the first step by picking up the phone to make an appointment. The counsellor needs to be empathetic, non judgemental and atuned to the caller's needs. An effective counsellor must be able to understand the inner world of the individual, their thinking and emotions. A counsellor can only do this if they have explored their own inner world during their training. University, books and lectures alone do not make an affective counsellor. If you want to climb a mountain do you take a guide with a map or a guide with a map who has also climbed that mountain?"
